2011 GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Laura Hollander, Marina

ALL-COUNTY FIRST TEAM

Molly Babcock, Woodbridge, senior

The Warriors' senior earned her second consecutive all-county first-team selection with another big season. She had the county's individual top time at the Woodbridge Invitational and finished third in the sweepstakes race at the Orange County Championships. After winning her second consecutive Pacific Coast League title, Babcock finished seventh at the CIF-SS Division 2 finals to lead the Warriors to a fourth-place team finish. She was fourth at the CIF Division 2 state final, where she had the second best time among county runners in all five divisions. With Babcock leading the way, Woodbridge placed fifth in Division 2 at the state final.

Melissa Eisele, San Clemente, sophomore

The Tritons' sophomore is a two-time all-county first-team selection after leading the Tritons to a historic season. She recorded individual race victories at both the Laguna Hills and Stanford invitationals. Eisele finished fourth in the sweepstakes race at the Orange County Championships before winning her second consecutive South Coast League title. Eisele was the Tritons' leading finisher (and top 10 among all county runners in all five divisions) at both the CIF-SS finals and the CIF state meet, as San Clemente won Division 1 team titles at both competitions for the first time.

Nicole "Coco" Evans, Woodbridge, senior

Evans, selected to the all-county first team for the first time, combined with teammate and fellow all-county runner Molly Babcock to form one of the top combinations in the state. She was eighth in the sweepstakes race at the Orange County Championships and finished third at the Pacific Coast League finals. Evans had the fifth best time of all county runners in all five divisions at the CIF-SS finals and tied for the 10th best time among all county runners in all five divisions at the state meet.

Kellian Hunt, Whittier Christian, senior

Hunt earns her second consecutive all-county first team selection by turning in another strong season. She posted an individual race victory at the Dana Hills Invitational and was ninth in the sweepstakes race at the Orange County Championships. After winning the Olympic League individual title, Hunt had the fastest CIF-SS Division 4 qualifying time in prelims and finished third in the finals. Hunt closed the season by placing fourth at the Division 4 state final and producing the fourth best time of county runners among all five divisions. It also marked the third consecutive season she finished in the top six at the Division 4 state final.

Emily Scharmann, Tesoro, junior

The Titans' junior is a first-time all-county first-team selection. She collected individual race victories and led Tesoro to team triumphs at both the Woodbridge and Dana Hills invitationals. Scharmann also led Tesoro to the Sea View League team title with her first individual league title. She then had the county's seventh best time among all five divisions at both the CIF-SS finals and CIF state final, leading Tesoro to a sixth-place team finish in both competitions.

Paige Tennison, Newport Harbor, junior

Tennison earned her first all-county team selection with a breakout season. After winning her first race of the year with the county's top time at the Laguna Hills Invitational, Tennison also had the fastest time of all county runners at the Clovis Invitational. The following week, she staged an impressive rally in the final mile to win the sweepstakes race at the Orange County Championships. Tennison was second at the Sunset League finals and then turned in the county's top individual times among all five divisions at both the CIF-SS preliminaries and finals. Tennison placed sixth at the Division 2 state final and had the third fastest time among county runners in all five divisions.

Danica Wyson, Aliso Niguel, senior

Wyson bounced back from leg injuries during her junior campaign to earn her second all-county first-team selection. She produced early-season individual race victories at both the Laguna Hills and Dana Hills invitationals and then came on strong in the season's final month of competition. Wyson was fourth at the South Coast League finals, then placed fifth overall at the CIF-SS Division 1 finals (producing the third fastest time among county runners in all five divisions.) At the CIF Division 1 state final, Wyson was 12th and had the fifth fastest time of county runners in all five divisions.

2011 COACH OF THE YEAR

Dave Proodian, San Clemente

In his 11th season as coach of the Tritons, Proodian helped guide the program to a season of historic accomplishments. San Clemente won the Division 1 team title at the Stanford Invitational and finished second in the sweepstakes race at the Orange County Championships and the South Coast League finals. The Tritons finished off the season by winning the CIF-SS Division 1 and CIF Division 1 state titles, both for the first time in school history. "When I started here we were at the bottom of the barrel, and after 11 years, to be able to say that you're a state champion is unbelievable," Proodian said. "Our community has been amazing and has embraced us and we're really looking forward to next year."
