Canyon defeats Woodbridge in wild-card round

ANAHEIM - Besides a potential matchup with fourth-seeded Newport Harbor, the Canyon girls water polo team entered the CIF-SS Division 1 wild-card round with some added motivation.

The Comanches were playing for revenge against Woodbridge, which defeated Canyon by a goal on Jan. 19.

On Tuesday, the Comanches got revenge and more when they scored eight goals combined in the second and third periods to defeat the visiting Warriors, 10-7.

Canyon (17-12) advances to take on Newport Harbor in a first-round game Wednesday.

“I think it was just a matter of teamwork,” Comanches coach Caitlin Haskell said of her team’s victory. “This was a game where a lot of girls stepped up.”

The score was tied at one after the opening quarter, and that’s when Canyon made its move. Cydney Eltiste, Nicole Williams, Sierra Stoddard and Jenna Jekums scored two goals apiece in the middle periods and staked the Comanches to a three-goal lead after three.

“My team kind of comes alive in the second quarter,” Haskell said. “In the first quarter, they get kind of jumbled. It’s just a matter of going into the second quarter taking a deep breath and attacking the open cage.”

The Warriors (16-9) stayed within striking distance thanks to Lauren Babb and Shawna Kedzie, who scored three goals each.

Canyon goalkeeper Savannah Ey managed to stave off most of Woodbrige’s other scoring threats. She finished with eight saves.

Michelle Pannier recorded nine saves for Woodbridge and Tina Frechette had five steals.
