IN THE SPOTLIGHT

La Habra: This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise given that the Highlanders won their third consecutive CIF-SS championship last season. And this year they will be the class of the league again, featuring possibly one of the most potent offenses in the county. The Highlanders return four offensive linemen, four receivers and Washington State-bound quarterback Cody Clements. Last year he threw 29 TD passes.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Buena Park: The Coyotes have a new coach, Anthony White, who is trying to bring a new attitude to the program. The practices are tougher and the players are showing a disciplined approach that was missing last year.

PLAYER TO WATCH

Cody Clements, La Habra, QB: Now a senior, he has evolved into one of the best quarterbacks in the Southwest Division. As a junior, he threw for 2,095 yards, making him one of only eight QBs in the county to surpass 2,000 yards. There will be added pressure on Clements this year because the Highlanders lost running back Josh Quezada to graduation. Quezada, now at BYU, was the third leading rusher in the county in 2009 and scored 24 touchdowns.
