San Clemente storms into semifinals

FOR OCVARSITY.COM

SAN CLEMENTE - Whoever says soccer lacks scoring obviously has not seen the San Clemente boys team in action.

The top-seeded Tritons used a four-goal first half to spark them to a 7-2 victory over Santa Barbara in a Division 1 quarterfinal matchup Friday night at San Clemente High.

The victory sets up a meeting between San Clemente (28-2-1) and JSerra in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Goals came early and often for San Clemente on Friday as it continued to score at a torrid pace. It has outscoring itsopponents 13-3 this postseason, building on its record-setting regular season.

The Tritons took all of four minutes to get on the scoreboard as Blayne Martinez set up Alek Cucuk in the air for an easy header and opening goal. In the 10th minute, Oscar Hernandez played a short corner kick to Gage Zerboni, and after a return pass, Hernandez placed a cross in the penalty area that was met by Martinez for the 2-0 lead.

The Dons were unable to get the ball out of their half as San Clemente played a high back line and pressured Santa Barbara with its attack.

The Tritons were able to assert their dominance by scoring another pair of goals in the next six minutes as Colin McDermott scored from point-blank range and Cucuk completed his brace with a header off Zerboni's cross.

Zerboni scored a pair of goals in the second half and also recorded an assist when he found reserve midfielder Bryce Kaminski, who became the fifth Triton to find the net.

Zerboni's first goal came in the 56th minute when Santiago DiGiuseppe evaded a defender on the right wing and played a cross. Zerboni found the ball in a scramble and scored to make it 5-1.
