San Clemente overcomes sluggish start

OCVARSITY.COM

SAN CLEMENTE – San Clemente appeared a little flat at the start of its CIF-SS 1A first-round boys basketball playoff game against Capistrano Valley on Friday night.

But when the second quarter started, the Tritons came to life, and flattened any hope of a Cougars upset.

San Clemente outscored Capistrano Valley by 14 points in the second quarter to give itself a double-digit lead it would never relinquish on its way to a 71-52 victory at San Clemente.

The outcome wouldn't have been possible without a superb effort from Jimmy Bankson. Bankson scored 30 points, 18 in the first half, and knocked down four 3-pointers to lead the Tritons (18-10).

"I was feeling good today," Bankson said. "I got a couple of good looks early and they were going in. I felt like tonight was going to be a good night, so I just kept shooting it and it kept going in."

Even though Nick Crankshaw only scored eight points, his energy on the defensive end was invaluable for San Clemente. His defense was a major key in the Tritons' 18-0 run in the second quarter.

Cody Bean played the role of maestro for the San Clemente offense. He had five assists and helped Bankson get open shots.

"Cody does a great job moving the ball and finding who's hot," Tritons coach Marc Popovich said. "He found Jimmy and he kept finding him."

Capistrano Valley (8-19) came within 11 points of San Clemente in the fourth quarter, thanks to Jacob Short (20 points).

San Clemente will play at Millikan of Long Beach on Tuesday.
