San Clemente triumph pleases coach
SAN CLEMENTE – San Clemente's tenacious full-court pressure and ability to knock down the 3-point shot proved to be too much for Rancho Buena Vista of Vista on Friday night in the Orange County vs. San Diego Showdown at San Clemente High.
The Tritons (3-3) used a balanced and efficient attack on offense throughout the first three quarters en route to a 77-63 victory.
"We've really tried to be more up-tempo this season," San Clemente coach Marc Popovich said. "We're pretty solid one through nine on our team, and we can rotate guys in and be active and aggressive.
"Tonight, our guys defensively really rotated well, and offensively we shared the ball beautifully. It was so much fun to watch our guys play like that."
San Clemente guard Jimmy Bankson scored a game-high 20 points, including 4 of 9 from behind the 3-point arch, and sparked an early 15-6 run that helped the Tritons jump to an early, 39-26, second-quarter lead. The Tritons hit four 3-point baskets during the stretch, and their sharp shooting helped them extend the lead to 49-30 at halftime.
The Tritons kept the hot shooting going to open the second half.
Two plays after the Longhorns' Donovan Hilliard scored the first basket of the third quarter to make it a 49-32 game, Brock Eissman connected on a reverse layup that fueled a 13-0 Tritons' run to push the lead to 64-34. Eissman finished with 11 points, including 3 of 5 from the charity stripe.
The Tritons finished the third quarter strong and took a 71-38 lead into the fourth quarter before Popovich emptied his bench.
Cody Bean also scored in double figures for the Tritons. Bean added 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including three 3-pointers.
San Clemente shot 44.4 percent on the night and made 9 of 20 3-point baskets.
Aliso Niguel 72, Oceanside 40: The Wolverines took a 37-21 lead into halftime and rolled to victory. Kai Sato had a team-high 17 points for Aliso Niguel, and Scott Lynds and Mauricio Campos each added 10 points.
