Kickoff 2012: Santa Margarita preview

OCVARSITY.COM

Last season record: 13-2 overall, 3-2 league

Postseason: 2011, won CIF-Southern Section Pac-5 Division and CIF State championships

Coach: Harry Welch (3rd season, 22-5)

Home stadium: Saddleback College

Outlook: The Eagles find themselves very high in some national rankings – second in USA Today’s, first in rivals.com’s. Those rankings were completed before two 2011 All-Trinity League players, running back Alex Suchesk and receiver Sean Modster, transferred to Mission Viejo. Santa Margarita still has plenty of returning standouts. The list starts with All-County quarterback Johnny Stanton, and continues with these All-County returnees – defensive back Connor O’Brien, offensive linemen Dane Crane and Riley Sorensen, and running back Ryan Wolpin. Another offensive lineman, Eric Bunte, committed to UCLA (Crane committed to Washington, as did O’Brien). Defensive end Nick Begg committed to Arizona State. Receiver River Cracraft committed to Washington State. So, with nine returning players on offense and six more on defense, this could be another magnificent season for Santa Margarita football.

Factoid: Welch has coached state championship teams at Santa Margarita, St. Margaret’s and Canyon of Canyon Country.

School record: 182-87-3
