10:23 p.m.
The first day of the CIF State Wrestling Championships is finally in the books. There are four county wrestlers remaining in the championship bracket. Bobby Morales (Laguna Hills, 130), Morgan McIntosh (Calvary Chapel, 189), Tank Knowles (Calvary Chapel, 215) and Michael Manighalam (Calvary Chapel, 285)
There are seven in the consolation bracket: Tyler Adams (Tesoro, 112), Michael Vargas (El Dorado, 130), Charles Chavez (El Dorado, 140), Walker Slaugher (Irvine, 140), Sean Datte (Tesoro, 171), Preston Quam (San Clemente, 189) and Wyatt Baker (Servite, 285). These guys will have to win their first match of the day to guarantee themselves a place in the top eight at state.
Morgan McIntosh started the day looking like he was going to pin all of his opponents, but couldn't stick Jordan Rubio of Righetti. It wasn't McIntosh's fault.
Tank Knowles was just as dominating, recording two victories by fall and another by major decision. He is on track to face JT Felix of Centennial of Corona in the finals. It will be the third time this season.
The surprise of the first day has to be Michael Manighalam. Manighalam knocked off the Nos. 2 and 5 ranked wrestlers to advance to the semifinals. He also said, he's the reason why McIntosh and Knowles are so good. I will post that story tomorrow.
7:43 p.m.
Charles Chavez (El Dorado, 140) is still in. He just recorded an 13-2 victory over Johnathan Gomez of Madera South.

Bad news for Calvary Chapel, Gavin McDonald (103) just got eliminated.
Also, Servite's Wyatt Baker advances with an 10-2 victory. Barry Gee (Fountain Valley stays alive.
5:45 p.m.
Morgan McIntosh just recorded pin No. 3 to advance to the quarterfinals. His opponent was Matt Dakin of Elk Grove, the fall came in 45 seconds. McIntosh looks all business.

All three county wrestlers at 119 pounds (Alex Fairbanks, Blake Lowrie and Peter Palacios) have been knocked to the consolation bracket.
Tyler Adams (Tesoro, 112) is still alive as is Michael Vargas (El Dorado, 130).

The same for Cameron Carlberg (Santa Margarita, 125).

However, Erick Zumwalt (Edison, 135) was defeated by Josh Lowe of Atascadero, 5-2. That is Zumwalt's second loss of the tournament.

Sean Datte (Tesoro, 171) rallied from a 5-4 deficit in the third period to defeat Armando Ontiveros of Sylmar byfall. Datte won his first match of the day by fall in the third period. The 189-pound weight class is a loaded one for Orange County. There are four wrestlers (McIntosh, Preston Quam, Weston Hawkins and Ivan Ortiz).
I see Calvary Chapel coach Arsen Aleksanyan walking around the floor, that means that McIntosh is due out soon.

**Ricky Haynes (Bonita Vista) has recorded two victories by fall. He will face Jesse Delgado in the next round.
12:06 p.m.
By now, you're well aware that this is Charles Chavez's fourth appearance at the state tournament. He has to yet to place, but I think this is the year that streak ends. He wasted little going to work against Chris Calderon of Winters scoring three quick takedowns.
He would eventually win by major decision 12-3.
Also, Walker Slaughter (Irvine) won by fall at 140. Alec Robbie (Tesoro) defeated Cody Pack, 3-2. Pack is ranked second in the state.
Edison's Victor Diaz (140) won by fall over Kevin Burrage of Del Oro.

Erick Zumwalt (Edison, 135), lost by fall. Michael Vargas (El Dorado, 130) lost a 4-3 decision to Alex Abobo of De La Salle. The next round of consolation is scheduled for 2 p.m.

11:16 a.m.
Alex Fairbanks (Troy, 119) remains undefeated so far with an 8-6 victory over Chris Aguilar of Stockdale. His postseason run has been a remarkable story. Also at 119 pounds, Calvary Chapel's Peter Palacios won his first match. Blake Lowrie (Laguna Hills, 119) also advanced.
At 112s, Frankie Arounvong (Laguna Hills) won by fall in his first match.
10:45 a.m.
Gavin McDonald won his first match, but then had to face top-ranked Nashon Garrett of Chico in the second round. Garrett recorded a 10-2 major decision.
More tough luck, Tyler Adams (Tesoro, 112) opened the tournament against top-ranked and defending state champion Alex Cisneros of Selma. Cisneros led 2-0 heading into the third period and that is how the match ended.
Wyatt Baker (Servite) records a 2-0 victory over Steven Wood. Also, Paul Yoo (Cypress, 189) lost his first match.
10:35 a.m.
Jared Fier (Santa Margarita, 103) opened the second round victory by fall. This was his first match of the day.
Recapping the end of the first round: Michael Manighalam (Calvary Chapel) won at heavyweight, 18-11 over Matthew Rashad. Wyatt Baker is in a scoreless match against Steven Wood and Barry Gee (Fountain Valley) just scored a late reversal for an 11-9 victory.
Coming up next, Gavin McDonald takes on Nashon Garrett of Chico at 103. Garrett is ranked No. 1 in the state.
10:15 a.m.
Morgan McIntosh (Calvary Chapel, 189) recorded a second period fall over Gene Sirovsky of Dublin in his first round match. McIntosh is a defending state champion, having won last year at 171 pounds. His goal is to dominate the tournament and domination means winning all matches by fall. Can he do it?
Three of the county heavyweights (Barry Gee, Michael Maninghalam and Wyatt Baker) will be out shortly.
Justin Levalle (Servite, 171) just lost to Luke Sheridan of De La Salle. Sheridan is ranked sixth in the state. Last time I looked, the score was 9-0 Sheridan. They just made the call for wrestlers to start reporting for the second round of championship.
10:10 a.m.
Also, Carlos Arana (Esperanza) lost at 160s.
Morgan McIntosh (Calvary Chapel, 189) is headed out soon.
9:52 a.m.
Before I could finish that last statement, Chad Scheaffer (Marina, 145) won by fall over Thomas Logwood of Castlemont. It is a good thing that I have my binoculars this year. The 160's (Carlos Arana, Esperanza) and the 171's (Justin Levalle, Servite and Sean Datte, Tesoro) will be coming out soon.
9:45 a.m.
Someone told me that Alec Robbie (Tesoro, 135) could be a sleeper at this tournament. He's off on the right track as Robbie recorded a technical fall victory over Lloyd Poston. So, far the county guys are 4-0 in the first round. Up next, shortly will be Marina's Chad Scheaffer at 145 pounds.
9:25 a.m.
Cameron Carlberg (Santa Margarita) just opened the state tournament with a 14-2 major decision over Zack Wiley of Freedom.
9:22 a.m.
We're off an running here at the Bank (AKA Rabobank Arena)...Gavin McDonald (Calvary Chapel, 103) just defeated Artemo Flores of James Logan, 7-6.
Alex Fairbanks (Troy, 119) just opened up a can of whoop (you know the rest) on Edgar Padilla of Oakland, winning by second period fall. Fairbanks nearly had a fall in the first period, scoring a pair of 3-point near falls.
