Capo Valley Christian struggles in 16-0 loss

Tri-City Christian holds the Eagles to 45 total yards and has little trouble in winning its opener.

SAN CLEMENTE - As he looked at the scoreboard at halftime, Capistrano Valley Christian coach Chris Fore wondered if he had made the right decision.

He had never put points on the board for another team, he said, but when he asked punter Christian Hutchisson to step out the back of the end zone for a safety, it looked like the decision was going to backfire.

However, a couple of second-half touchdowns spared the Eagles the indignity of a two-point loss as they fell, 16-0, to Tri-City Christian of Vista on Saturday at San Clemente High.

Tri-City dominated the game, especially on defense, as it limited Capistrano Valley Christian to only 8 yards in the first half, 45 in the game. Second-string quarterback Landon Melzer - starting in place of Sean Connolly, who regains his eligibility next week - was sacked six times before leaving the game because of a concussion.

Jason Pierce was sacked once.

The game turned for good in the third quarter when Capistrano Valley Christian lost a fumble after mustering some offensive momentum.

Two plays later, Tri-City Christian quarterback Andrew Torkelson peeled around the left side for a 46-yard touchdown run. It seemed to deflate Capistrano Valley Christian, and Tri-City’s next drive covered 80 yards in 17 plays.
