Brethren Christian falls to Big Bear
LUCERNE VALLEY - Brethren Christian’s football season came to an end on a cold, windy day in the high desert on Saturday.
Big Bear beat the visiting Warriors, 27-20, to advance to the second round of the CIF-SS East Valley Division playoffs.
The game was moved to Lucerne Valley High after an early-season winter storm blanketed the Big Bear field and chains were required on vehicles traveling to the mountains.
Although clear, the high desert weather was cold and blustery, and the wind impacted the kicking games, sending four extra-point attempts wide of the uprights.
Brethren Christian stopped Big Bear’s normally explosive option offense in the first half and took a 12-6 halftime lead on a touchdown run by Jared Fuga and a 15-yard scoring pass from Jack McInally to Guy Demazelier.
The Bears responded in the second half, scoring three touchdowns, including a 35-yard scamper by John Hawkins with just over three minutes remaining in the game that sealed the victory.
Big Bear’s Travis Smith and Hawkins each intercepted Brethren Christian’s McInally on key fourth-quarter drives to preserve Big Bear’s lead.
McInally completed 14 of 23 passes for 162 yards. Brandon Byson and Austin Gorrell were the leading receivers. Byson had four catches for 34 yards and Gorrell 4 for 39.
Lucas Jenkins rushed for 110 yards on 23 carries to lead the Bears.
