SVC succumbs in fourth quarter
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO - Saddleback Valley Christian headed into Friday night’s CIF-SS Northeast Division first-round playoff game against Desert of Edwards Air Force Base looking to advance to the second round and extend its winning streak.
The Scorpions (7-4) had other plans.
Desert quarterback Brandon Valdez rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another in leading the Scorpions to a 28-21 victory over the Warriors at San Juan Hills High.
Valdez ended the game with 155 yards rushing on 22 carries and passed for 98 yards while completing 6 of 14 passes. Valdez started at quarterback in place of injured starter Matthew Moore.
SVC (6-5) jumped to an early 14-0 lead after a 3-yard touchdown run by Forrest Lohman in the first quarter and a 35-yard touchdown reception by Caleb Ward in the second. Lohman, who entered Friday’s game as the No. 4 rusher in the county, rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries.
Valdez scored the lone touchdown of the first half for the Scorpions when he raced 71 yards on an option-quarterback keeper to make it 14-6.
Lohman extended the Warriors’ lead to 21-12 in the fourth with a 10-yard touchdown run — a score that was set up by his 57-yard run earlier in the drive.
But the Scorpions were too much down the stretch.
Desert scored 16 consecutive points late in the fourth to prevail.
