Edison youth shows through in loss

PALM DESERT – Edison coach Rich Boyce has noted that at times this season his team's lineup can feature four sophomores.

For long stretches Friday afternoon, the Chargers looked their age.

Edison (7-7) fell victim to the pressure defense and physicality of Santiago of Corona in a 47-32 defeat on the final day of pool play in the Fairfield Inn Division of the MaxPreps Invitational at College of the Desert.

"I'm hoping that (my team) takes away that they have to put 32 minutes together," Boyce said after the Chargers' lowest scoring output of the season. "We put together a solid first 15 minutes, but I think the last minute of the first half we let it go again."

The score was tied at 17 after 15 minutes, but the Sharks went on a 6-0 run in the final minute of the half to take a 23-17 lead into the break.

Santiago (11-3) opened the third quarter with a 5-0 run to open up a 28-17 lead, but despite a poor shooting night, the Chargers were able to get the lead back into single digits behind 16 points from Brae Ivey.

"We would climb back in (the game) and then let it go again," Boyce said. "We were making a lot of sophomore mistakes, but we're getting better."

Santiago guard Markus Thompson made sure the Chargers would not get all the way back as he opened the fourth quarter with 11 of his 13 points, giving the Sharks an 18-point lead, their largest of the game.

Edison was back on its heels from the beginning, as it could not overcome Santiago's high energy and physical pressure defense.

"This is a tough team to play," Boyce said. "They press, get in your face, and are very strong and physical. They wore us down. We expended a lot of energy trying to get the ball up the floor."
