CERRITOS Quarterback Brendan Chambers rushed for a career-high 274 yards and five touchdowns as Saddleback Valley Christian defeated Fairmont Prep, 52-28, to capture the San Joaquin League title Friday at Valley Christian High.
Chambers scored on runs of 20, 40, 2, 20 and 5 yards as the Warriors finished the regular season undefeated (10-0, 7-0) and advance to the CIF playoffs next week. Despite the loss, the Huskies (7-3, 6-1) earned a berth in the playoffs.
“This is great for our team to win league and go undefeated,” said Chambers, who also completed 14 passes for 182 yards and intercepted a pass.
Chambers scored two TDs before Fairmont had an opportunity to run its first play from scrimmage. He capped the Warriors’ first possession with a 20-yard TD run.
One play and 14 seconds after SVC recovered an onsides kick, Chambers rambled 40 yards for a second TD and the Warriors led 14-0 after 3 1/2 minutes. Late in the quarter, Chambers added a third TD run, increasing SVC’s lead to 21-0.
Josh Bendaw and Aryan Meknat scored TDs for the Huskies in the second quarter to cut SVC’s lead to 24-14.
