Calvary Chapel earns first trip to playoffs since '01
Calvary Chapel defeats Estancia, 12-10.
Calvary (4-6, 2-2) earned its first CIF playoff berth since 2001. Estancia finished the season at 3-7 overall and 1-3 in league play.
"It's fantastic for the kids," Calvary Chapel coach Lyle Lansdell said. "We got in. I'm so proud of them."
All the scoring came before halftime. Calvary scored on touchdown runs of 7 and 4 yards from Scott Matsuda, who finished with 179 yards on 30 carries.
Alex Abalos scored Estancia's only touchdown on a 13-yard run. Eli Diego added a 29-yard field goal.
Diego's 41-yard attempt in the fourth quarter was blocked by Edward Siders and Calvary kept the lead.
Calvary appeared primed to run out the clock late in the fourth, but a Calvary fumble gave Estancia hope. However, after driving to Calvary's 35, Estancia's hopes were dashed by a personal foul and illegal chop block penalties.
Estancia drove inside Calvary's 10 to start the second half. On first-and-goal, Brandon Perez intercepted the ball in the end zone to preserve Calvary’s lead.
"That was huge," Lansdell said.
