Note: The ranking of El Toro's boys is corrected to No. 5.
LAKE FOREST - It's called spring break but Jon Daniec knows the word "break" doesn't apply to his swimming.
The Mission Viejo standout rose early Thursday morning for a two-hour club workout. He then had breakfast before racing at the Diablos' traditional spring-break meet at El Toro later in the morning.
Daniec's pool-time didn't end there. The junior headed back for afternoon workout with the Mission Viejo Nadadores.
"That's what we do," he said, "every year."
While spring-break training left many swimmers tired for the meet, a few quick times were posted as the teams split the nonleague event.
El Toro's No. 5-ranked boys defeated Mission Viejo, 108-62. Mission Viejo's No. 3-ranked girls beat No. 10 El Toro, 105-65.
El Toro's Kelsey Engel captured the 50- and 100-yard freestyles in season-best times. The junior claimed the two-lap sprint in 25.02 seconds - two one-hundredths of a second off the automatic qualifying standard in Division I.
"I was hoping to break 25," she said.
Engel later won the 100 free in 53.59 - well under the Division I auto time. Engel's time also was a second faster than her time at this meet last season.
El Toro's Tyler Small produced a season-best in the boys 50 free. Racing in Lane 1, the 6-foot-4 senior touched in 21.97 - just off the Division I automatic standard.
"I didn't think I was going to break 22," he said. "It was good."
Daniec won the 200 individual medley (2:05.67) with a prolonged stretch for the wall and also claimed the butterfly in 55.30.
Mission Viejo junior Tyler Weissman, who also trains with the Nadadores, won the 500 free in 4:55.72 and was second in the backstroke to El Toro's Martin Vanek (Division I auto 54.07) with a 56.61.
Mission Viejo freshman Taylor Guy captured the 100 fly (1:02.10) and 500 free (5:29.02) to help pace Mission Viejo's girls.
UC San Diego-bound Casey Adams of Mission Viejo led a first-second-third sweep in the breaststroke with a 1:10.68. Adams also won the 200 IM in 2:15.77.
El Toro's Larissa Todisco won the 200 free in 2:00.01 and finished a strong-second to Engel in the 100 free with a season-best 54.36.
