Turner lifts Brea Olinda into quarterfinals

FOR OCVARSITY.COM

BREA – Michael Turner scored 23 points and pulled down 18 rebounds as Brea Olinda broke open a tight game in the second quarter and went on to defeat Murrieta Mesa of Murrieta, 50-36, in a second-round, CIF-SS Division 3AAA game Friday night at Brea Olinda.

The Wildcats (21-7) advance to Tuesday's quarterfinals and will play Servite, which beat Sonora on Friday.

Turner sparked a 14-0 run by Brea during a four-minute span of the second quarter that turned the tide of the game and propelled the Wildcats to a double-digit lead.

The 6-foot-3 junior forward scored nine points during the spurt. Gavin Proctor's free throw capped the run and gave Brea a 23-9 lead with 2:54 to go in the half.

The Rams cut the lead to 23-13 after back-to-back baskets by Shane Staton (23 points), but Turner added two baskets in the final 1:20 of the half as the Wildcats took a 27-14 lead at the break.

"We showed up with intensity and stayed aggressive on defensive," said Turner, who scored 17 of his points during the first half.

Villus Vysniauskas also turned in an outstanding game as he scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

"We picked it up on defense and took away their driving lanes," Vysniauskas said. "We moved the ball well and executed on offense."

The Rams (17-12), third-place finishers in the Southwestern League, were held to single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters.

They struggled with shooting throughout the game.

"We locked them up down and controlled the glass," Wildcats coach Jeff Sink said. "We rebounded well, played pretty good defense and didn't turn the ball over."

Jonathan Wallace and Jason Muehihoff had eight rebounds apiece, and Chandler Ramos added seven points for Brea.

Darren Tan's basket at the buzzer boosted the Wildcats to a 38-21 lead after three quarters.
