Beckman pounds Irvine, earns Fence Post Trophy
TUSTIN - Beckman's football team celebrated after capturing its first Dennis Toohey Fence Post Trophy on Friday night with a 31-7 Pacific Coast League victory over Irvine at Tustin.
Now the Patriots can set their sights on a PCL championship. Beckman (7-2, 4-0) meets co-PCL leader Corona del Mar next Friday night at Newport Harbor.
"I don't think they knew the gravity of the Fence Post until we started talking about it on Tuesday," Beckman coach Ken Mushinskie said.
"On Wednesday it was not in their minds much, but Thursday and definitely today, it really weighed heavily. ... I really think the kids played a little extra hard to get that trophy."

The trophy is given to the Irvine team with the best record against other city squads. Beckman finished 4-0 against the other Irvine teams.
Beckman dominated from the start, led by quarterback Cameron Biedgoly, who passed for 242 yards and one touchdown.
"We couldn't underestimate this team, we knew they could come out and put some points on the board," Biedgoly said. "Our defense played spectactular, they were the ones who got us pumped up."
Jeff Kim was also solid for Beckman, rushing for 133 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns.
Biedgoly connected with Elijah Steen on an 11-yard TD pass in the first quarter to put the Patriots ahead.
Kim then scored on a 6-yard TD run and Ryan Molina kicked a 22-yard field goal in the second quarter to put Beckman ahead, 17-0.
Irvine (4-5, 2-2) got on the scoreboard in the third quarter when quarterback Ryan Goodman connected with Matt Van on a 77-yard TD pass to cut the lead to 17-7. Beckman countered with two scores in the fourth quarter.
The Vaqueros can wrap up a playoff berth win a win Friday night against Woodbridge at Irvine.
