Beckman thwarts Estancia's upset bid

OCVARSITY.COM

COSTA MESA - Beckman’s football team gained some momentum for the start of Pacific Coast League play next week defeating Estancia, 12-10, on Thursday night in a nonleague game at Estancia.

The Patriots rallied from a 3-0 halftime deficit to win their second game in a row.

“It was a hard-fought game, and both defenses played very well and I’m glad we came out with a victory,” Beckman Coach Ken Mushinskie said.

Estancia (3-2) was trying to knock off its second consecutive PCL team. Last week, the Eagles defeated Northwood, 43-27.

But Beckman (3-2) was able to hold off the Eagles’ bid.

“I thought our kids played hard; our defense did a great job,” Estancia Coach Mike Bargas said. “Offensively, we couldn’t get the points we needed. But I thought overall, our kids hung in there with Beckman. Who would have thought it would be 3-0 going into the half?”

The Eagles took a 3-0 lead on a 32-yard field goal by Dan Cabrera with 8:14 left in the first quarter.

But Beckman responded in the second half. Quarterback Cameron Biedgoly connected with James Kaprielian on a 52-yard TD pass with 6:34 left in the third quarter. The Patriots missed the point after.

Beckman got some insurance when Biedgoly hit Ryan Molina on a 24-yard TD pass with 1:55 left in the third quarter. The Patriots were unable to convert a two-point conversion but led, 12-3.

Estancia cut the lead to 12-10 when quarterback Brad Wilson hit Sho Watanabe on a 4-yard TD pass with 7:45 remaining to make it 12-10.

Beckman was able to run out most of the clock on its next series. Estancia did get the ball back with 9 seconds left on its own 25, but two passes fell incomplete.

The Patriots were without their leading rusher last year, senior Jeff Kim, for the third game in a row for unspecified reasons.

“He is active on the roster, but right now he is just practicing,” Mushinskie said.

Mushinskie did not say whether Kim will play next week.
