Almiranez helps Ocean View hold off Newport Harbor
HUNTINGTON BEACH – Freshman Danelle Almiranez scored 11 points, including two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, as Ocean View held off Newport Harbor, 38-31, in a Hawk Holiday Classic quarterfinal game at Ocean View High on Wednesday night.
After trailing by 14 in the third quarter, the Sailors rallied to trim Ocean View’s lead to three, 32-29, when McKenna Izzi hit a jumper from 16 feet with 4:08 to go.
Almiranez answered with a 3-pointer from the top of the circle with 2:42 left. She struck again from the left side 24 seconds later, giving the Seahawks a lift.
“We go into a little bit of a funk in the third quarter, so we have been trying to do some different things to generate a little bit more offense,” said Ocean View coach Kim Morris. “We’re very young, so we have a little bit of this up and down thing going on. Fortunately, they are talented enough to be able to pull through.”
Ocean View (6-1) led, 8-5, after one quarter, and boosted the advantage to 15-5 halfway through the second on a pair of Meghan Meyer free throws and two field goals by Almiranez, one from behind the arc.
Jasmyn Winters would answer with Newport Harbor’s only field goal of the quarter, making it 15-7 with 3:44 left, and Ocean View held at 20-10 lead at halftime.
Izzi scored all of her team-high 10 points in the fourth quarter for Newport Harbor (2-5).
