Martinez sets record as Laguna Beach cruises
LAGUNA BEACH - Fourteen seconds was all it took for Laguna Beach to grab a lead on a record-setting Friday night while cruising past Saddleback, 49-6, at Laguna Beach High.
Drake Martinez broke the scoring record at Laguna Beach when he scored his second touchdown of the night on a 45-yard run in the second quarter. The record had been held by former Breaker Chris Paul.
Laguna Beach (5-0-1, 1-0) built a practically insurmountable 35-point halftime lead.
Robert Clemons returned the opening kickoff 96 yards as he faked a reverse to Martinez and raced untouched across the goal line. Clemons scored again when he returned a punt 55 yards.
Martinez paced the Breakers ground game with 133 yards while Nathan Lancaster rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns.
The Roadrunners (2-4, 0-1) were able to put together a respectable 14-play drive, but it ended at the Laguna Beach 29 after a fumble on third down.
The Roadrunners avoided a shutout by scoring in the third quarter as Michael Perez capped a nine-play drive with a 6-yard score.
