Northwood girls defeat Mater Dei in soccer

Sophomore Paige Gankema scored a second-half goal as No. 9 Northwood defeated Mater Dei, 1-0, Thursday in a nonleague soccer match at Northwood.

The Timberwolves improved to 2-0 with the victory over the Monarchs (1-1).

In other matches:

Capistrano Valley 1, No. 6 El Toro 0: Cynthia Dimnick scored in the first 10 minutes as the Cougars shut out the Chargers in a nonleague match at El Toro.

Orange Lutheran 5, Rialto 0: Missy Lizcano had a hat trick as the Lancers (2-0) defeated the Knights in the first round of the Great Oak Tournament in Temecula.
