The man with the voice is gone, but he still can be heard.

On Tuesday, beloved Huntington Beach baseball public-address announcer Arnie Rosen died, ending an arduous struggle against pancreatic cancer. Rosen, 77, was not just a terrific PA guy for the Oilers and previously for Golden West College, his dedication to Huntington included his regular attendance at practices.

Oilers coach Benji Medure knew of Rosen's death before Huntington Beach beat Chino Hills, 9-8, on Tuesday in the Division II semifinals, but he told the players about it after the game.

“The kids were sad, but happy,” said Medure, as the players knew they lost a friend but knew Rosen's suffering was over. They have dedicated Saturday's Division II final, in which the Oilers play Crespi of Encino at 4:30 p.m., to Rosen.

Huntington Beach has made an amazing run through the baseball playoffs. Of the five county teams in CIF championship baseball games, only Huntington had to play a wild-card round game. The Oilers then beat three league champions, including the No. 1 team in the state, Yucaipa, on their was to the finals.

Rosen missed those games, and the players miss him. But in the echoes of memory, his voice resonates loudly.

Taking a look around Orange County sports:

• Beckman's baseball team won a pair of two-run games against leagues' No. 2 teams, then took on their toughest competition yet in the layoffs, fourth-seeded, Golden League champion Lancaster, which had won 14 in a row. Result: Beckman 15, Lancaster 3. The baseball playoffs are unpredictable.

• When his job as a pilot allows him to be in town, Steve Chambers walks to every baseball game played by Capistrano Valley, for whom son Kevin is scheduled to be the starting pitcher Saturday at Angel Stadium where the Cougars play Edison in the CIF-Southern Section Division I championship game.

• The Orange County All-Star Baseball Game is Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Glover Stadium in Anaheim. Admission is $5, with proceeds going to charities supported by the Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim, which organizes and manages the event.

• Another postseason baseball event, the Ryan Lemmon Foundation Showcase, takes place June 12 and 13 at Ryan Lemmon Stadium at Windrow Park in Irvine. The June 12 schedule: South Coast League vs. Century League, 4:30 p.m.; Pacific Coast vs. Sea View, 7:35 p.m. The June 13 schedule: Trinity League vs. Sunset League, 10 a.m. A key part of the Showcase happens Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Newport Sports Museum, where a “Baseball Beyond High School” seminar features a panel of coaches, former Corona del Mar and UCLA player Tim DeCinces, and a pro scout to discuss post-high school options. • The South Coast League has an excellent Victory With Honor awards program to reward student-athletes who displayed exemplary sportsmanship during the school year. The following were recognized as Victory With Honor winners at a banquet May 27: Sara Jones and Jonathan Kilson, Aliso Niguel; Kate Hayes and Charles Pfirrmann, Capistrano Valley; Kristina Smith and Tyler Valdes, Dana Hills; Jennifer Richards and Dhruv Desai, Mission Viejo; Alex Dunne (more on her later) and Graham Tenney, San Clemente; and Megan Meyer and Brett Gudim, Tesoro.

• Orange Lutheran distance runner Staci Foster broke school records in the 1,600 and 3,200 at the CIF-Southern Section Masters Meet last Friday at Cerritos College, qualifying for the CIF State Championships in both events.

• It will be interesting to see how San Clemente distance star Dunne will do in the state meet, having pulled up a bit down the stretch in finishing fifth in the 3,200 at the Masters Meet.

• If you're looking for athletes peaking now, which is exactly the best time of the season to do so, watch out for Mission Viejo hurdler Devalle Pedrogo and Tustin sprinter Ameer Webb. Pedrogo won the 110 hurdles and Webb won the 200, beating favorite Randall Carroll of Cathedral of Los Angeles, at the Masters.

• A study of the Masters results and the county record book makes it appear that no county records will fall at the state meet. But we do see athletes produce shockingly incredible achievements in the state meet.

• All-County running back Josh Quezada has scholarship offers from BYU, Colorado State, Fresno State, Hawaii, New Mexico State, San Diego State, Stanford, Utah and Washington. The thinking here is that Quezada could star at either running back or safety in college.

• The first big football event of the summer is the Air Strike Tournament, a 16-team passing tournament, June 13 at Dana Hills and San Clemente high schools. County teams in it are: Dana Hills, Edison, Los Alamitos, Mater Dei, San Clemente, Santa Margarita, Servite, Tesoro and Trabuco Hills. A huge draw will be Oaks Christian of Westlake Village because its quarterback is Nick Montana, son of NFL Hall of Famer Joe Montana, who is an Oaks Christian assistant coach.
