Rivals Cypress, Yorba Linda score early, but tie
CYPRESS - Cypress earned a 1-1 draw against Empire League rival Yorba Linda after the teams traded first-half goals Friday afternoon at Cypress High.
Excellent wing play for Yorba Linda, led by Ashlee Webb, helped the Mustangs set the tempo and dominate possession of the ball in the early part of the game.
Cypress (9-6-2, 2-1-1) struggled to get more than one touch on the ball and looked shaky on defense during the opening minutes.
Yorba Linda (5-5-5, 2-1-1) opened the scoring thanks in part to a poor clearance by Cypress. Webb was able to control the ball and hold off a defender before beating goalkeeper Cierra Whitmer with ease as she walked the ball into the net. The lead was short-lived. Cypress evened it at 1-1 when defender Meghan Arce delivered a long ball through the air toward the goal that looked like a routine save for Kristin Kleinow. However, Kleinow mishandled the ball and Cypress midfielder Lexy Gerrits pounced on the loose ball and muscled in a shot from close range.
Webb continued her strong play up front in the second half and Yorba Linda looked primed to take the lead. The Mustangs had a goal called off when reserve forward Dana Jacobs was whistled for being offsides.
The game went into extra time and Yorba Linda missed out on a great scoring chance during the first half of extra time when Jacobs sprinted down the right flank and crossed the ball to Webb whose headed attempt at goal was stopped by Whitmer.
Cypress responded with shots on goal of their own, but two crucial saves by Kleinow secured the away point for the Mustangs.
The two teams will meet again on Feb 1 at Yorba Linda High.
