However the Aztecs relied on one of the county’s best running attacks to escape with a victroy.
Senior Tyler Drees kicked a 25-yard field goal in overtime and the No. 10 Aztecs rushed for 291 yards to escape with a 17-14 Sunset League victory over Marina Friday night at Estancia High.
“We made a lot of mistakes, but did a good job at the end,” Aztec coach Bill Pendleton said. “We are happy to get out of here with a victory.”
It was the Aztecs (6-1, 2-0) who broke through for the first points of the game late in the first quarter, as senior running back Jared Moore raced 46 yards for a touchdown, giving the Aztecs a 7-0 advantage.
Moore’s two-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter increased the Aztec lead to 14-0. Moore finished the game with 143 yards on 19 carries.
However, the Vikings (2-5, 0-2) answered on their next possession, as senior fullback Chris Fiscus scored from a yard out to narrow the Aztec advantage to 14-7 at the intermission.
Marina tied the score at 14 early in the fourth quarter, as Fiscus again found the end zone from one yard out.
On the Vikings first possession in the extra period, field goal kicker Chase Robinson narrowly missed a 36-yard field goal. The Aztecs then turned to senior running back Matt Hunsaker, who gained 18 yards to help set up the game winning effort by Drees.
