Huntington Beach pushes past Anaheim
ANAHEIM - Huntington Beach defeated Anaheim, 21-10, in their first-round CIF-Southern Section Southwest Division VI playoff game Friday night at Glover Stadium.
A 35-yard field goal by Anaheim’s Jesse Aguilar put his team up 3-0 with 1:22 left in the second quarter.
Huntington Beach (7-4, 3-2) put up its first score on a 5-yard keeper by quarterback Sean Guite with eight seconds left in the first half.
In the third quarter, Huntington Beach added onto its lead against Anaheim (5-6, 4-1) with a 3-yard TD run by Dennis McCarthy and a 2-point conversion run by Huntington Beach kicker Eric Chan to put the Oilers up 15-3 with 5:50 left.
Anaheim fought back with 8:35 left in the fourth quarter. The Colonists cut the score to 15-10 on a 1-yard TD run by running back Hector Rico and a point after score by Aguilar.
Anaheim’s best chance to come back and take the lead was stopped with 3:01 left in the fourth quarter.
On the ninth play of its drive, which started from the 9-yard line, Anaheim fumbled the ball at the 50 and linebacker Jacob Former recovered it for Huntington Beach.
With 1:18 left in the game, Huntington Beach put the game away with a 4-yard run by running back Nolan Biegel, to increase Huntington Beach’s lead to 11.
Biegel finished with 84 yards on 16 carries.
