No. 2 Los Alamitos fights off Edison challenge
The Los Alamitos girls volleyball team showed why it is the defending CIF-SS Division 1AA champions and 10-time defending league champions Tuesday night.
The second-ranked Griffins came back from two sets down to defeat the visiting Chargers, 27-29, 22-25, 25-17, 25-8, 15-4.
Los Alamitos started its comeback at the end of the second set when it scored six consecutive points to come within two of Edison. The Chargers (6-10, 0-2) were able to finish out the set, but the Griffins had the home crowd and momentum behind them.
In the fourth and fifth sets, Los Alamitos (20-3, 2-0) dominated the Chargers, scoring the first six points in the fourth set and the first 10 in the fifth.
“This win was huge,” Los Alamitos coach Dave Huber said. “Losing the first two sets and having to fight back, it was great with this crowd behind us.”
Los Alamitos was able to dominate at the end with the help of middle blocker Crissy Jones and outside hitter Mattie May, who finished with 10 kills. Jones scored five points in the final set to go along with her 20 kills.
“I don’t think you can even say enough about Crissy,” Huber said. “She was there on offense and defense.”
