Los Alamitos offense overwhelms Agoura
VILLA PARK – Cory Dodson, Rachel Fattal and Stephanie Mutafyan combined for 14 goals as Los Alamitos' top-ranked girls water polo team defeated Agoura, 16-8, in the finals of the Villa Park Classic on Saturday.
The Griffins (7-0) outscored the Chargers, 10-2, in the second and third periods.
Dodson finished with a match-high six goals while Fattal and Mutafyan added four apiece.
Los Alamitos coach Dave Carlson said the Griffins' offense is still a work in progress, however.
"I'm happy we're improving," Carlson said. "We definitely have a lot more work to do to be at the caliber I think we can be at, and these girls know it, too."
Agoura (4-1), ranked No.1 in Division 2, played without arguably its top two players in USC signee Savannah Fletcher (thumb) and defender Emily Carson (back).
The Chargers also were without Jenna Cutino (back), who played a key role in the semifinals against El Toro.
Fattal added five steals and was selected MVP of the 32-team tournament.
The Griffins held Agoura to a 4-for-11 effort on the power play.
Savanna Smith made all eight of her saves in the first half.
In the third-place match:
Montebello 12, El Toro 8: The Chargers (4-2) fell to the Oilers after losing in overtime to Agoura, 10-9, in the semifinals.
In the fifth-place match:
San Clemente 10, The Bishop's of La Jolla 9: Kelsey Thornton won the sprint to open sudden-death overtime and scored on a backhanded shot from center to lead the Tritons.
