Edison finally puts an end to the losing

The Edison boys volleyball opened Sunset League play with a much-needed victory, defeating Fountain Valley, 25-21, 18-25, 25-21, 25-20, on Tuesday at Fountain Valley High.

Danny McCarthy led the Chargers (5-10, 1-0) with 15 kills. Edison will host Huntington Beach Friday night.

Entering the match, the Chargers had lost their last four matches, dating back to the O.C. Championships and including last week’s nonleague matches against Servite and Corona del Mar.

No. 7 Huntington Beach 3, Los Alamitos 0: Zack Gates and Andrew Tenbrink recorded 10 kills apiece to lead the host Oilers (10-9, 1-0) in a 25-16, 28-26, 25-18 victory in the league opener for the both teams.

The Oilers were swept in three games last week by Mater Dei and Santa Margarita.

In another Sunset League match:

No. 2 Newport Harbor 3, Marina 0: Rusty Sary led the Sailors (10-6, 1-0) with 12 kills in the 25-17, 25-11, 25-8 home victory.

In the Pacific Coast League
No. 3 Corona del Mar 3, Northwood 0:
Jack Reed had nine kills and Brennan Anderson added seven in a 25-10, 25-9, 25-19 home victory for the Sea Kings (12-2, 1-0).

No. 10 Beckman 3, Woodbridge 0: Chris Long had 11 kills and six aces in two games as the Patriots (15-3) defeated the Warriors, 25-18, 25-16, 25-23.

Eric Johnson had 21 assists for the Patriots.

In the Trinity League:

JSerra 3, Orange Lutheran 2: The Lions (10-6, 1-1) were on the verge of suffering their second consecutive loss to the Lancers (5-9, 1-1), but rallied to win the final three games for a 23-25, 18-25, 25-9, 25-21, 16-14 home victory.

Last week, Orange Lutheran defeated the Lions in four games.

In the Sea View League:

El Toro 3, Capistrano Valley 2: The Chargers (15-6, 2-0) dropped the first two games but rallied to win the final three for a 23-25, 19-25, 25-18, 25-13, 15-11 road victory.

Stephen Tinen led the Chargers with 14 kills. Andrew McKellips added 13 and Ryan Hardy had 12. Phil Friedman led the Cougars with 16 kills.

In the Century League:

No. 5 Esperanza, 3, Foothill 0: The Aztecs improved 14-4 overall and 4-0 in the league play with their 25-19, 25-18, 27-25 road victory over the Knights (2-1).

Brian Beith led Esperanza with 11 kills. Andrew Benz had nine. Taylor Christoffers recorded 37 assists. Tanner Ruhlen led Foothill with nine kills.

In the South Coast League:

No. 8 San Clemente 3, Tesoro 0: Scott Hair led the Tritons (11-3, 2-0) with 10 kills and Travis Wilson added nine in the 25-13, 25-20, 25-15 home victory over the Titans, who fell to 1-2 in league matches.
