Letters editor Betty Talbert writes: Our pictorial walk down “2011 lane”  continues with photo galleries of some O.C.  local issues that are unique because they reflect news generated  right here in Orange County that drew some national attention. I have included links to letters on the subject for those of you who might enjoy letter-writer repartee surrounding these issues.

Huntington Beach Lifeguards: I know, living in Southern California life is always a beach, literally. And it is beautiful. It’s why we love it. So when the Huntington Beach Lifeguard pay issue shot into the limelight in May of this year summer came early as we created these  slide shows of O.C. beaches and lifeguards.

Huntington Beach Little League: Huntington Beach hits another home run this year as we shout “Hooray for members of the  Huntington Beach Little League” who won the  Little League World Series this year.

The Irvine 11 trial: September of this year the UCI Muslim Student Union/Irvine 11 trial finally ended. The incident and resulting trial drew national when Irvine students stopped the speech of Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren, Feb. 8, 2010:

The Kelly Thomas beating by Fullerton police dominated letters during the summer and early September after the O.C. District Attorney’s office filed charges against two of the officers involved. The overwhelming majority of writers felt that the amount of force used by police was unconscionable.

Crystal Cathedral bankruptcy: With its magnificent Garden Grove edifice in play the debate turned from management of the ministry, which led to its bankruptcy, to the purchase of the protestant Cathedral by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange.
