Collegiate Sports of America will conduct an elite girl’s softball combine and college recruiting showcase Oct.15 at Worthy Park, 17th and Main Street, Huntington Beach.

The athletes will be tested in groups and by positions: Pitchers and catchers, 9 a.m.; infielders, 11:30 a.m.; outfielders, 2 p.m.

Each group will be tested for speed, hitting and skills, according to their respective position.

The combine is scheduled during an NCAA evaluation period for college coaches who wish to attend.

BITS & PIECES: Author to discuss steroids use

Jeff Rutstein, author of “The Steroid Deceit: A Body Worth Dying For?”, a cautionary tale for teens, parents, coaches and anyone interested in keeping young people off steroids, will engage in two discussions and book signings next week in Orange County.

Rutstein, a nationally acclaimed personal trainer, used steroids during his bodybuilding career. That led to abuse of other drugs and ultimately clinical depression.

During his recovery he discovered a connection between physical fitness and emotional health. Rutstein will appear at Borders, 25222 El Paseo, Mission Viejo, on Tuesday at 7p.m. and at Borders, 3333 Bear St., Costa Mesa, on Oct.16 at 2 p.m.

Long Beach State baseball player Sean Boatright (Trabuco Hills High) will receive the Long Beach State Hall of Fame Inspirational Award on Oct. 20 during the annual Hall of Fame Banquet.

Boatright will receive the Todd Hart Courage Award with Erika Chidester (women’s volleyball).

The award is presented to an athlete who best exemplifies courage.

Boatright has battled injuries throughout his career with the 49ers. He missed the 2002 season because of back injuries. Last year, he posted a .299 batting average.

Former UC Santa Barbara goalkeeper Dan Kennedy (El Dorado High) was selected as the USL First Division Rookie of the Year.

Kennedy, who played for the Puerto Rico Islanders, posted a 10-10-8 record and five shutouts. He finished second with 114 saves.
