OC Varsity RSS
What is RSS?
Keeping up to date with information pertinent to you can be difficult in today's universe of millions of Web pages.
Wouldn't it be great if the latest news and features were delivered directly
to you? That's now possible, thanks
to RSS, short for 'Really Simple Syndication'. It allows you to identify
the content you like and have it delivered directly to you.
It takes the hassle out of staying up-to-date.
Not all websites provide RSS, but it is growing rapidly in popularity
and many news organizations, including the New York Times, the BBC and CNN, do provide
it.
How do I start using RSS feeds?
You need something
called a news reader. There are many
versions, some accessed using a Web
browser and some that
are downloadable applications. All
allow you to select and view the RSS
feeds you want.
Once you have a news reader, all you
have to do is to decide what content
you want. For example, if you would
like the latest Local news stories,
simply click on the RSS link on this
page. You can subscribe to the feed
of your choice in various ways: by
dragging the URL of the RSS feed into
your news reader or by cutting and
pasting the same URL into a new feed
in your news reader. Some Web browsers,
including Internet
Explorer, Firefox and
Safari, automatically pick up RSS
feeds for you. For more details on
these, please check their websites.
For more information, Search
Engine Watch has a great
explanation of RSS and News readers.
How do I get a News Reader?
Different news readers work on different operating systems,
so you will need to take this into account when you make your choice. There are many news readers for each operating system available now, and more are being introduced daily.
