With the regular season quickly winding down, it’s time for another review of the Register’s annual Hot 150 list of football players to watch.

The “studs” are ranked players who are having great seasons and the “snubs” are players exceeding my expectations or who I ranked too low on my list or perhaps not at all.

I’m keeping this positive, so my only two categories are Studs and Snubs:

STUDS

11. Maurice Davison, Servite, CB/KR — I’ve covered Servite against Bishop Gorman and Santa Margarita and neither team challenged #1 at cornerback. That’s a sign of respect for arguably the best corner in the county. Davison also showcased his return skills last week against Santa Margarita. He broke numerous tackles on a long kickoff return late in the fourth than helped set up a TD. That’s how you play with heart.

100. Pat Godoy, Valencia, QB — The Tigers’ dual-threat quarterback proved he was Top 100-worthy last week by breaking an 84-yard TD run late in the third quarter of a 14-13 victory against Cypress in a key Empire League game. The victory gave Valencia sole possession of first place.

SNUBS

91. Rick Ellison, Santa Margarita, LB/RB — Ellison challenged teammate Grady Higgins for defensive player of the week honors but was the best two-way player on the field last week against Servite. In his first real action at running back, he racked up a career-high 118 yards and also had eight tackles and blocked a field goal.

119. Keaton Cablay, Newport Harbor, WR –– Cablay has delivered a monster season and will receive All-County consideration. Twelve receiving TDs will get a receiver noticed. Not bad for No. 119.

NR (not rated) Conner Miller, Brethren Christian, QB — In his first season as a starter at Brethren, Miller has fired TDs at a record pace. The senior had 38 passing TDs entering Week 9 and collected four more Thursday against Crean Lutheran to set the county single-season record.

140. Ramon Chaves, Villa Park, LB/RB — Chaves’ combination of being a defensive stopper and grueling runner with a nose for the end zone will warrant a promotion next season. He’s one of the county’s top juniors.
