Robert Frith has accepted the athletic director position at El Toro and resigned as the school’s football coach, school assistant principal Ed Begany confirmed today.

In the Saddleback Valley Unified School District, to which El Toro belongs, an athletic director cannot simultaneously hold a head coaching position.

Similarly, Troy Roelen had to relinquish duties as Mission Viejo’s basketball coach when he became the school’s athletic director in the 2014-15 school year.

Begany said Frith made the change voluntarily.

Frith coached El Toro for six seasons. The Chargers were 40-18 during his tenure. Frith coached El Toro to a CIF championship game in 2011.

El Toro in 2014 finished 8-4 overall. The Chargers were third in the South Coast League with a 2-2 league record. They beat Los Alamitos in the first round of the West Valley Division playoffs and lost to Great Oak of Temecula in the second round.

The Chargers were known as a pass-heavy offensive team under Frith. In 2011, El Toro quarterback Conner Manning set the Orange County single-season passing record with 4,219 yards.

El Toro is accepting applications for a football head coach. The position includes a teaching assignment. Candidates can go to edjoin.org to apply.
