Foothill boys, St. Margaret's girls play for biggest prizes Friday
Southern Section lacrosse titles will be at stake in the contests at Trabuco Hills High.
The road to the Southern Section championship was paved with the pressures of playing in three one-goal victories last year for the Foothill boys lacrosse team.
This year, the Knights have had to deal with the pressures of trying to repeat what it accomplished last season.
“The guys have felt the pressure throughout to play up to the standard that's expected of us,” Foothill coach Jon Fox said. “This year, we're the defending champions, we have a big group of seniors and we were expected to be at this level.”
The Knights, with 25 seniors on their roster, won their second consecutive O.C. championship May 2 and will now try for another Southern Section title when they face Palos Verdes on Friday (7 p.m.) at Trabuco Hills High.
Foothill defeated Palos Verdes, 11-10, in last year's final.
“They're a well-coached team with good athletes,” Fox said of Palos Verdes. “They graduated quite a few players and it is a tribute for them to be able to repeat.
“It is going to be a great matchup.”
Palos Verdes was the top seed in the North Division. The Sea Kings defeated Oak Park, 8-7 in the semifinals Wednesday.
Foothill was the top seeded team in the Orange County championships.
Before the Knights attempt for their second section title, the St. Margaret's girls team will attempt to be first Southern Section winner in girls lacrosse. The Tartans will face Palos Verdes on Friday at 5 p.m.
St. Margaret's defeated Los Alamitos, 12-7, for the county championship Wednesday. Mary-Rachel Walsh had four goals and Lauren Ciccomascolo had three goals.
The Tartans enter on an 11-game winning streak. The Sea Kings defeated Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach, 17-13, in the North Division final Wednesday.
“We've worked hard all year,” St. Margaret's coach Summer Crabtree said. “We've had a pretty challenging schedule and these girls really grown from the very beginning (of the season).”
