OCVarsity.com
South El Monte built a 27-point lead at the half en route to a 54-7 victory over Sonora on Friday night in the first round of the CIF Southeast Division playoffs at South El Monte High.
The Raiders' (5-5) lone score came on a 1-yard sneak by quarterback D.J. Esquivel in the fourth quarter.
The Eagles (7-4) are the Mission Valley League champions and were led by quarterback Jose Garay who finished the season with 2,015 yard passing and 23 touchdowns.
Sonora received a gift to get into the playoffs when Troy was forced to forfeit six victories for use of an ineligible player.
The shuffle pushed the Raiders into the playoffs.

| Gift giving before Christmas.
The Freeway League has a hard enough time earning respect in Orange County, not to mention the Southeast Division.
Sonora went to South El Monte and had their butts handed to them by a team with a 1500 student enrollment that lost to Del Rio Leagues' 5th nad 6th place teams, Whittier and Pioneer.
Troy wouldn't have been this enbarrasing. |
