Calvary Chapel picks up first victory
LAGUNA BEACH- Calvary Chapel topped Laguna Beach, 23-12, Friday in Orange Coast League play at Laguna Beach High.
Senior running back Brandon Snook rushed for 182 yards on 34 carries to lead the Eagles (1-8, 1-1) to their first victory of the year.
With five minutes remaining, Calvary Chapel was clinging to a 17-12 lead and facing a fourth-and-7 in Laguna Beach territory.
Snook came through for the Eagles, catching a screen pass from quarterback Tikey Mahlow, then breaking three tackles on the way to a 28-yard gain and his second touchdown of the night.
After scoring the game’s first touchdown, the Breakers (1-8, 0-2) yielded 17 consecutive points and trailed, 17-6, after three quarters.
Laguna Beach got back in contention with a 68-yard drive to start the fourth quarter. Senior Charley Bowman sparked the Breakers’ march, splitting out wide to catch a 31-yard pass, throwing for 20 yards on a critical third down, and scoring on a 1-yard quarterback sneak to pull Laguna Beach to within 17-12.
