Kennedy wins ugly
DOWNEY - Kennedy took advantage of some defensive miscues and muscled its way to a 42-13 victory over Downey on Friday night in a nonleague game at Downey High.
The Fighting Irish (3-2) didn't make it easy on themselves by being penalized at least five times in the first quarter.
Quarterback Zack Emde completed 10 of 18 passes for 120 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.
D.J. Boulton ran for a score from 7 yards out and caught two more. Salvador Aguilar caught a 13-yard pass in the fourth quarter from Emde to put the game out of reach.
When Kennedy scored with 3:29 left in the first quarter, it did so only after being at the Vikings 5-yard line and getting pushed back to the 30 because of penalties.
The Vikings (1-3) got on the board first in the second quarter with a pair of field goals by Brian Sandoval, and then early in the third quarter on a 1-yard run by quarterback Antonio Mendez.
Mendez's first two pass attempts were intercepted by Eric Torrez and Chris Tirado.
Kennedy's Corey Smith rushed for 80 yards on 15 carries. But a 40-yard pass to receiver Jordan Collins on a reverse set up a 6-yard run by Smith to put the Fighting Irish on the scoreboard early in the first quarter.Contact the writer: mmelendez@ocregister.com
