Softball: Young, Plaza selected to USA women's junior national team

Lauren Young

Canyon's Lauren Young of Arizona and Edison's Jessica Plaza of Stanford were among the 17 athletes selected to the 2013 USA Softball Junior Women's National Team, the Amateur Softball Association of America and USA Softball announced on Friday.

Young is batting .341 with five doubles, eight home runs, 17 runs and 23 RBI in 32 games in her freshman season for the Wildcats. Plaza is batting .298 with two doubles, one triple, two homers and 13 RBI in 19 games in her freshman season for the Cardinal.

The team will compete in preperation exhibition games on June 24 in Glenville, W.V., before heading to the International Softball Federation X Junior Women's World Championships (19-and-under) July 1-7 in Brampton, Ontario, Canada.

Jessica Plaza

Cal State Northridge's Tairia Flowers will be the head coach and Oregon State's Laura Berg, Fresno State's Trisha Ford and UNLV's Lisa Dodd will also be on the coaching staff.
