Tim Sweeney submitted his resignation as boys basketball coach at M.L. King of Riverside. Sweeney said today he was requested to do so by school administration and by the Riverside Unified School District.

Sweeney said parental pressure is behind the request for his resignation.

“It’s been two years of parental attacks,” Sweeney said. “We have a rogue group of parents. Their whole intent was to get me out.”

King won the CIF-Southern Section Division 1A championship this past season, Sweeney’s 14th coaching the school’s varsity team.

“Even after winning the title, they were still going after me,” said Sweeney, who added that his health has been negatively affected by the situation.

Sweeney, 51, said he will remain at King as a physical education teacher and has aspirations to coach at the collegiate level.

During his tenure, King has won three CIF-SS championships, a state championship and seven league titles.
