I did a live blog for the Sunny Hills-Troy game on Thursday at Troy High. Here's how it all went down:
LIVE FROM TROY HIGH
I have the Mobile OCVarsity Press Row set up at Troy High for the Freeway League showdown between Sunny Hills (11-7, 3-0) and Troy (14-4, 3-0). Sole possession of first place in league is at stake. The Freeway League title is always a battle down to the wire.
Here we go.
Sunny Hills is not messing around in the top of the first.
Nebraska-bound Marjani Knighten leads off the game with a single and steal second.
Madi Cruse with a grounder to short and they try to get MJ at third … No way! MJ is way to fast and everybody is safe.
MJ's lil' sis, Marshaylee Knighten, who has committed to Oklahoma, singles to drive in her big sis.
Viviana Ruiz hits a slow roller down the third-base line and Troy gets the Marshaylee at the plate. Two down. Bases are still juiced.
Val Romano walks to force in another run and the Lancers have a 3-0 lead.
Vanessa Batt grounds out to end the inning.
Let's see if Troy can come back and get into this game.
Former Troy players are here to support their girls.
Riley Nahrwold is throwing for Sunny Hills. She's a good little pitcher that keeps the Lancers in games.
Cal State Fullerton-bound Gabby Rodas walks to lead off the bottom of the first for Sunny Hills.
Miranda Trinidad flies out deep to center ... D'Oh!!!E-8!!! and the Warriors have runners on second and third with no outs.
Concordia-commit Ryann Ferguson grounds out to second to drive in Rodas and the Warriors cut it to 3-1.
Megan Dardis bloops a single to shallow right field and that drives in Trinidad to make it 3-2. I don't know if Trinidad is related to Puerto Rican boxing legend Felix “Tito” Trinidad. I'll check on that.
We have a ball game.
Nahrwold strikes out Kristen Randall. Two down.
Kristen Kvaska steps to the plate and she's a big fan favorite withe former Troy players. Kvaska flies out to end the inning.
Sunny Hills 3, Troy 2 after 1 inning.
IT'S GAP BAND TIME
Top of the order coming up for Sunny Hills in the top of the second.
Nebraska-bound Marjani Knighten smokes a double to the gap in left-center field to lead off the inning.
Madi Cruse sacrifices her to third.
Oklahoma-commit Shay Knighten rips a single to left to drive in her big sis and the Lancers lead is 4-2.
Amber Elliott grounds out, but moves the runner to second.
Jennifer Brubaker hits a nubber to second base that goes for an infield single. Shay with some heads-up base running scores from second on the play to make it 5-2.
Sarah Wilson grounds out to end the inning.
Hailey Danko gets HBP'd to lead off the bottom of the second.
Jessica Rathmel singles up the middle and Troy has runners on first and second with no outs.
This is going to be one of those wild Freeway League games.
Cori Okada tries to get down a sacrifice … DENIED!!! 3B Marjani Knighten gets to it quickly turns and hits her lil' sis at third to get the lead runner. One down.
Here comes the top of the order for Troy.
Cal State Fullerton-bound Gabby Rodas drops a bomb on Sunny Hills. This one is deep down the left-field line … will it stay fair … it's gone!!! A three-run bomb for Rodas to tie it, 5-5.
Sunny Hills 5, Troy 5 after 2 innings.
Sunny Hills' Viviana Ruiz leads off the top of the third with a shot to right-center field … DENIED!!! Concordia-committed CF Ryann Ferguson makes a nice running catch.
Troy starter Jessica Rathmel with her first 1-2-3 inning to retire the Lancers.
Troy's Gabby Rodas tied things up with her three-run bomb in the bottom of the second. Can Troy takes its first lead?
Kristen Randall draws a one-out walk.
Troy can't make anything happen.
Troy 5, Sunny Hills 5 after 3 innings.
THIS ONE'S GOING DOWN TO THE WIRE
After all that activity in the first two innings, Troy ace Jessica Rathmel records another 1-2-3 inning to retire Sunny Hills in the top of the fourth.
Rathmel has retired seven consecutive batters.
Rathmel singles to right-center … DENIED!!! Sunny Hills 2B Madi Cruse shows off her hops, going up the ladder to rob Rathmel of a single. Cruse was a stud on Sunny Hills' girls basketball team too.
My canopy just blew over. Luckily, no women or children were harmed.
