Tournament director and Mater Dei coach Matty West talks about the tournament: “Looking at each of the different brackets in this year's Premier Invitational, I see some potentially incredibly charged match-ups. The Mater Dei Premier Invitational offers a terrific gauge of where teams are at going into their league seasons. It is an opportunity to showcase your strengths and identify your areas where you need improvement. I am excited to have such a dynamic landscape of teams from different leagues with different styles competing against each other. I believe that success in the MD Premier Invitational translates into a long post-season run.”

Defending Champion: Aliso Niguel

In what turned out to the first of four epic encounters last season, the Wolverines rallied to defeat South Coast League archrival San Clemente 3-1 in the title match. Aliso Niguel is officially credited as a two-time defending champion. The Wolverines and Tritons were named co-champions in 2010 after heavy rains forced the cancelation of the championship match.

Wednesday's schedule

(All games played at Mater Dei)

2:30 PM: Bishop Amat vs. Foothill (Field 1)

4:00 PM: Beckman vs. Mission Viejo (Field 1); Villa Park vs. Mater Dei (Field 2)

Wednesday's Spotlight Match:

Group B: No. 1 Aliso Niguel (4-1-1) vs. No. 8 Tesoro (2-2-1)

The Wolverine open the defense of their tournament title with a match against South Coast League rival Tesoro, who rejoins the league this season. Aliso Niguel defeated Trabuco Hills 1-0 in a nonleague match last week, rebounding from dropping the title match of the Aliso Cup. In six matches this season, Aliso Niguel has allowed only two regulation goals. The Titans were in action last week at the Soccer With Hope Tournament, posting a 1-1-1 overall record. Tesoro scored a season-high six goals in a 6-1 win over Pacifica in its' last match.

Five players to watch:

Dominique Bond-Flasza (Aliso Niguel, Jr.): The Wolverines talented attacker currently leads the team with five goals scored this season.

Nikki Faris (San Clemente, Jr.): One of the county's quickest and most dangerous play makers.

Mia Hummel (Canyon, So.): The Comanches sophomore has recorded six or more saves in six of Canyon's first seven matches this season

Nikki Martino (Beckman, Sr.): The senior forward is once again one of the county's best scoring threats. She has scored six goals this season.

Bethany Sutherland (Villa Park, So.): Sutherland has been a big catalyst for the Spartans this season, leading the team in both goals (five) and assists (five).
