The Stanford men's water polo team received key performances from Forrest Watkins (Los Al) and Andrew LaForge (Servite) over the weekend at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos to capture its first SoCal Tournament crown since 2002.
In the championship, Stanford and Coach John Vargas (Corona del Mar) defeated Cal, 10-9, in overtime behind six goals from freshman and U.S. junior team center Alex Bowen (Santana of San Diego).
Bowen also scored the winning goal in overtime. Watkins added two goals for the Cardinal.
Stanford defeated top-ranked and eight-time defending SoCal champion USC, 6-4, int he semifinals.
Watkins scored twice and LaForge added one as the Cardinal snapped a 22-match winning streak by the Trojans.
