Day 1 Holiday Cup Report (updated 12/29)

By DAN ALBANO

OCVarsity.com

NEWPORT BEACH -- Bonus coverage from Day 1 of the Holiday Cup:

* Corona del Mar coach Aaron Chaney has literally borrowed a page from Lakers coach Phil Jackson. Chaney has assigned his players to read a book -- "The Mental Edge" by Kenneth Baum.

* Rosary dropped its first-round match to Santa Barbara, 11-9, in overtime.
The Royals hurt their chances by going 2 for 13 on the power play.
Rosary also missed a penalty shot in overtime.

* Dos Pueblos touted freshman Kiley Neushul scored nine goals in two matches.
But sophomore goaie Sami Hill also was valuable for the Chargers, making 25 saves.

* Speaking of DP, the school has a new pool and will co-host the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions in January with Santa Barbara, SB coach Mark Walsh said.

* Long Beach Wilson senior goalie Amanda Hardy is uncommitted and unsigned by a four-year school, according to Bruins coach Tony Martinho. That's hard to believe.
