El Toro girls water polo chooses Tilton as coach

Notebook: Saddleback, Tesoro water polo coaches resign.

El Toro has selected Matt Tilton as its girls water polo coach. Tilton replaces Don Stoll, who resigned after last season.

Tilton, 32, played water polo and swam for El Toro. He has been a varsity swim coach for the Chargers since 2000.

Last season he was The Register's boys swimming coach of the year.

El Toro's girls water polo team finished second to Foothill in the Sea View League last season and fell to Newport Harbor in the Division I quarterfinals.

COACHES STEP DOWN

Saddleback's Monte McCord and Tesoro's Mike Gibson have resigned as boys water polo coaches.

McCord, a former county coach of the year, is taking over the men's water polo program at Orange Coast College.

McCord coached Saddleback's boys for 17 seasons will be replaced by his brother, Derek.

Gibson said he resigned to devote more time to teaching. He coached the Titans for six seasons.

THOMPSON TO PLAY IN ALL-STAR GAME

Santa Margarita basketball standout Klay Thompson (6-6, 190) will play in the Under Armour's Capital Classic game Sunday at the University of Maryland.

Thompson, who is headed to Washington State, is listed as a guard for the all-star game.
