Beating the No. 1 team in the nation and taking home the Karch Kiraly Tournament of Champions title this past weekend in Santa Barbara were just two incentives for Newport Harbor boys volleyball coach Dan Glenn. His seniors had never beaten title-game opponent Valencia of Valencia, which beat the Sailors earlier this season.
“Some people say it's a tuneup for CIF,” Glenn said after Saturday's 25-20, 25-23, 21-25, 19-25, 15-10 victory. “I've kind of never said that. But we kind of had it as one of the things marked on our calendar.”
Newport Harbor (24-3, 6-0) has won 14 in a row, but cannot get comfortable as it closes its season on the road against Fountain Valley, Los Alamitos and an Edison team Glenn said has made him “nervous.”
“Edison's playing with a lot of emotion,” he said. “Everybody's kind of improving right now. We are on a little bit of a roll, but I'll feel a lot more comfortable after our next three matches."
LAST CHANCE?
The second hottest team in the county might be Edison, which began the month with a record under .500 before beating the likes of Corona del Mar and Los Alamitos. The Chargers' (13-10, 5-1) only loss in the past four weeks came to the Sailors, whom they host today for what could decide the Sunset League title. The Trinity League title also might be on the line today when Mater Dei (14-8, 5-1) visits Santa Margarita (24-5, 6-0). The Eagles won earlier this month.
