Newport Harbor wins Kiraly tournament by knocking off nation's No. 1 team

The Sailors defeat Valencia of Valencia to win event filled with nationally ranked teams.

Newport Harbor captured the title Saturday night in the Santa Barbara/Karch Kiraly Tournament of Champions, knocking off the nation's top-ranked team in the championship match.

The Sailors (24-3) won the title by defeating Valencia of Valencia, 25-20, 25-23, 21-25, 19-25, 15-10, in the final at Santa Barbara High.

Valenica entered the tournament ranked No. 1 in StudentSportsVolleyball.com's national top 25 rankings. The tournament included seven teams in the top 25.

Newport Harbor, ranked No. 1 in the county and in CIF-SS Division I, was No. 4 in the national poll.

The Sailors' Kyle Caldwell was selected the tournament's MVP. Tucker Peleauses, Mark Leibermann were all-tournament selections.

Valencia reached the final by defeating Corona del Mar in Saturday morning's semifinal, 25-22, 25-20, 25-19.

Newport Harbor won its semifinal against Bullard of Fresno, 25-15, 25-21, 25-13.
