League leaders remain perfect
Boys volleyball: San Clemente, Newport Harbor and others are making strong statements.
For four weeks there were no favorites or underdogs among CIF-SS Division I boys volleyball teams.
Santa Margarita beat Edison, which beat San Clemente, which beat Foothill, which beat Woodbridge, which beat Huntington Beach, which beat Los Alamitos, which beat Santa Margarita. It was March Madness.
April has been anything but, as all four league leaders are unbeaten. Here is a breakdown of how it happened and the challenges that loom ahead.
Sea View
Woodbridge (4-0) made a statement against second-place Foothill to open league. It can make another one this week against Huntington Beach.
South Coast
San Clemente (4-0) has swept three league opponents and can separate itself this week with a victory against second-place Tesoro, which took the Tritons to five games two weeks ago.
Sunset
Newport Harbor (4-0) has swept Los Alamitos, Fountain Valley and defending CIF champion Esperanza, but its rematch next week with second-place Edison, which it beat in five games in their first meeting, might decide the league title.
Trinity
Santa Margarita (4-0) has beaten second-place Mater Dei twice this season, yet will probably need a third victory against the Monarchs next week to wrap up league.
