Esperanza's Adams, Edison's Hayes run toward future
Track and field notes: The runners show O.C. still will be strong at 1,600 when Babcock is gone.
Norwalk Orange County's present and future were on full display in the girls 1,600 meters Saturday at the 90th annual CIF state track and field championships at Cerritos College.
While Woodbridge senior Christine Babcock was setting the high school federation record in the event, two runners who will look to become future champions put forth strong performances, too.
Esperanza sophomore Teeny Adams, who entered the race with the 11th-best qualifying mark, confidently hung with the main pack throughout the race and battled her way to a sixth-place finish in a personal-best time of 4:53.25.
"It feels so good to perform like this at the state meet," Adams said. "These results show me that I can be really good."
For Edison junior Hillary Hayes, who finished eighth overall in a time of 4:53.78, her performance was retribution for last season, when she failed to make it to the state finals.
"I was happy that I made it this far," she said. "I have gained much more confidence in myself and will take that into next year."
Hayes also credited Babcock with being an inspiration to her.
"As a fellow runner, she is a motivation to me and I look up to her," Hayes said. "She is such a great girl,"
