O.C. runners, jumpers fare well in CIF prelims
Track and field notes: Woodbridge freshman Scott, Santa Margarita's Hawkins among top qualifiers.
Here is a quick recap of some of the county highlights from this past weekend's CIF preliminaries:
Division II:
Woodbridge senior Christine Babcock was the top qualifier in the 3,200 (10:43.99), and placed second (5:02.07) in the 1,600 behind Edison junior Hillary Hayes (5:01.66). Hayes (10:52.35) was third in the 3,200.
Warriors freshman Gabrielle Scott (56.70) was tops among all 400 runners, and teammate Kyle Wolff (57.26) finished second. Scott (25.12) also qualified in the 200, with Wolff (2:16.14) finishing fourth overall in the 800.
Cypress senior Melissa Morris, Huntington Beach junior Allison Koressel and Mater Dei sophomore Brooke Arthur and three others tied for first in the girls pole vault with a clearance of 10 feet, 6 inches.
The Mater Dei duo of sophomore Michael Woepse and junior Matt Cooper, along with Edison senior Ryan Simioni, finished in a seven-way tie for first in the pole vault with a clearance of 14 feet.
Division III:
Corona del Mar senior Shelby Buckley (2:17.18) was the top finisher in the 800, and posted the fourth best time of the day in the 1,600 (5:05.70). Teammates sophomore Kim Condino (2:18.34) and junior Tina Theriot (2:19.04) qualified for the finals in the 800, as did the Orange Lutheran duo of freshman Taylor Williams (2:19.36) and senior Taylor Dutch (2:19.42). Santa Margarita freshman Katherine Delaney (5:00.22) finished second overall to Brea Olinda senior Vanessa Hancock in the 1,600, and Orange Lutheran junior Staci Foster (5:03.88) placed third.
Eagles senior Kelly Collins (14.89) finished first overall in the 100 hurdles and second in the 300 hurdles (44.64).
Santa Margarita sophomore Claire Hawkins and Rosary senior Molly Mahony finished as the top qualifiers in the pole vault, clearing 10-3.
Orange Lutheran senior Sam Delgado (1:55.68) was the top qualifier in the 800, and Servite senior Mike Villasin (1:56.33) finished second.
Corona del Mar's Thomas Dialynas (4:20.54) placed first in the 1,600, and Brea Olinda senior Erich Yanoschik (4:21.86) took second.
Magnolia senior Kenneth McGee (23 feet, 3 inches) was first overall in the long jump, with Sea Kings senior Blaine Bolus (45-8) finishing second overall in the triple jump.
Division IV:
JSerra sophomore Harrison Steed began his quest for a state title in the high jump by finishing tied for first with a clearance of 6-2.
Whittier Christian senior Kyle Clark (39.86) was the top finisher in the 300 hurdles.
Calvary Chapel senior Chelsea VanCott was the top qualifier in the 3,200 (11:19.41) and second overall in the 1,600 (5:10.20).
Divisional Finals:
The CIF Divisional Finals will take place Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. Field events begin at 10:30 a.m., and running events are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
