Delaney makes simple plan pay off
Track notes: The freshman wins the 800 and 1,600 at the Trinity League finals.
Santa Margarita freshman Katherine Delaney acknowledged that she had a simple goal in mind during her races at the Trinity League track finals.
I just tried to stay ahead the whole time and keep up the pace, said Delaney, who did that and more by winning the 1,600 meters in a meet-record time of 4:57.22.
Breaking five minutes is definitely a confidence boost going into CIF.
Delaney returned later in the day and produced another big effort, winning the 800 in 2:16.90. Her performances put her amongst the county leaders in both competitions.
Making the accomplishment even more noteworthy is that Delaney is also on the Eagles varsity swim team, which has forced her to balance workouts for both sports throughout the season.
Delaney gave a lot of credit to her coaches for helping her prepare for both sports.
My coaches are really flexible and have done any amazing job of helping me balance my track and swimming meets, she said.
Eagles distance coach Gil Garcia noted that despite Delaney's limited workout time with the team, she has the tools to excel in track.
She is a very gifted runner who has the competitive instinct and confidence to be really good, he said.
